Texas State Capitol
The capitol building construction was started in 1882. It is made of a very hard rock (granite). The color is "Sunset Red". The granite was donated by it's owners from where is now Marble Falls. The state gave the stone and 1000 convicts for labor and to quarry the stone to the contractors. In 1885 the cutters union boycotted the project because of the use of convicts. At that time the contractor imported master cutters from Scotland.
The Goddess of Liberty was placed on top of the dome at it's completion in 1888. The Capitol building was complete. It was over 310 ft. high and contained 392 rooms, 924 windows and 404 doors. The cost in 1888 to build it was $3,744,600.00.
The Goddess was refurbished and replaced in the 1990's. We saw the helicopter placing it . Very interesting
